FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
I did not live here last year. Why did I receive a tax bill? The tax
remains with the property regardless of ownership. To determine your liability
for paying the tax, check your closing statement to see if the seller gave you
credit, or contact your attorney.
My tax bill seems too high. How can
I make sure it is correct? We suggest that you call the Assessor's Office
to verify that you are receiving the exemptions for which you qualify. They can
also answer any questions pertaining to your assessed valuation. If you have any
questions about the rate charged by a specific taxing body, we suggest that you
contact that taxing body.
I did not pay my taxes last year. Where can
I find out how much I owe? Call the White County Clerk at 618-382-7211
ext. 431 and ask for an Estimate of Redemption. Make sure to have your parcel
number handy.
Can I prepay my taxes? No, White County is not
able to accept prepayment of property taxes.
I own multiple parcels
in the County. Can I pay with one check? Yes you can. Please make sure
that your math is correct and list the parcel numbers of the properties you are
paying on your check. Include the correct coupon(s) for each payment you are making.
Does a late tax payment affect my credit rating? No, this office
does not report late tax payments to any credit bureau.
If I pay by
mail, how can I get a receipt? Mail your entire bill in and we will stamp
your part paid and return it to you.
Is there a charge for a copy of
my bill?
No, we do not charge homeowners for duplicate copies of their
tax bills. For mortgage companies there is a $3.00 fee per parcel.
My
name has changed. Who do I contact to change this on my tax bill? For
all name changes contact the Supervisor of Assessment Office at 618-382-2332 ext.
435.
I have moved. Who do I contact to change my address? For
all address changes contact the Supervisor of Assessments Office at 618-382-2332
ext. 435.
What is my parcel identification number (PIN)? Your
PIN number or permanent parcel number, identifies your particular piece of property.
If you need this number, contact the Supervisor of Assessment's Office. You can
give them your name and the property address, and they can provide you with a
PIN number.
What if I do not receive a bill? If you do not
receive a bill, it is your responsibility to contact our office to get a duplicate
bill. If you are a new homeowner and the bill was issued in the previous owner's
name, contact the Treasurer's Office for a duplicate bill. Failure to receive
a tax bill, or receiving one late for any reason, will not relieve the taxpayer
from paying taxes or late penalties.
What if I receive a bill that
is not my responsibility to pay? If a mortgage company is to pay your
bill, it is your responsibility to forward your bill to them. If you no longer
own the property, it is your responsibility to forward the bill to the new owners.
What if I cannot pay my taxes? What will happen to my property? If
you are late, you may still pay your taxes and penalties up until the Friday before
the tax sale date. We are required by law to hold a tax sale, which is usually
held on the last Monday in January. At that time, your taxes will be sold to someone
who will pay them for you. It is important to note the property itself is not
sold. After the tax sale, you will be liable for the tax amount sold at the tax
sale and interest at a rate determined the day of the sale.
How are
my oil taxes figured? The White County Supervisor of Assessments Office
can help you with this. You may contact them at 618-382-2332 ext. 435.
