Each month the Treasurer reports to the County Board the amounts of money invested
in banks listed by account and the checking account balances. Also included in
this report are the County Offices budget reports.
The County Collector
prepares bills for the purpose of tax collection of real estate, drainage and
mobile home taxes within the county.
Upon receipt of the tax monies the
County Collector proceeds to disburse these funds to the taxing districts. Tax
collection funds are kept in interest bearing accounts. The interest earned on
these accounts is disbursed to the various taxing districts proportional to the
amount of tax collected for them.
The White County Real Estate Tax Bills
are mailed the last Friday in July. This general mailing is the only mass mailing
of real estate tax bills. Only one bill per parcel is mailed. The total bill (each
installment) is included in this tax bill. A separate mailing is not made
for the second installment.
The White County Real Estate Tax Bill is mailed
with two payment coupons, each representing an equal installment of the current
tax due.
The center section of the tax bill shows a comparison between
this year’s taxes and the prior year’s taxes. The comparison is shown for each
taxing district that receives your money. The comparison is not only shown by
amount, but also by tax rate.
The right side illustrates how your individual
tax bill was computed. Please note the exemption boxes. The Senior exemption is
for people 65 years old and older. The property involved must be your principal
residence. The Senior Tax Freeze exemption allows qualified senior citizens to
freeze the equalized assessed value of their property. The Owner Occupied exemption
is granted to owner-occupied residences. If you have questions about the exemptions
or you did not receive an exemption, and you believe you should have, contact
the Supervisor of Assessments at 618-382-2332 ext. 435
The County Collector
holds a tax sale at the end of every tax year to sell the tax on every parcel
that remains unpaid.
The County Collector receives and records inheritance
tax. She must report and pay inheritance tax collections to the State Treasurer.
The Treasurer collects and deposits monies from the state. These include
in part; sales tax, supplemental sales tax, income tax, salary reimbursement,
replacement tax, grants, emergency management assistance program monies, and motor
fuel tax.
